Pottery Progression- Improving on your throwing skills
Our pottery progression classes are ideal for those who have done some throwing previously and are looking to hone in on their skills. In this class we focus on a more personal approach to throwing and creating in smaller 2 person classes. This allows for plenty of one-to-one teaching. Throughout the class we will be focusing on how to pull a tall cylindrical form to help us create more advanced forms such as tall vases and larger serving bowls.
Pottery Progression also dives into the finishing stages of your pottery such as drying, trimming, smoothing and adding texture and handles. These final touches can truly make your piece feel like they have been finished off professionally before your favourite 2 pieces are kiln fired.
Firing time for pieces vary each month however we will always aim to have your pieces bisque fired within 6 weeks. If you wish to return to glaze your pieces with our variety of quirky glazes, we run pottery painting classes every Tuesday evening and Sunday morning for an extra charge of £30. We also offer a free clear glaze service to make your pieces food safe and water tight.
What to expect?
- More one-to-one teaching in smaller classes of 2 people max
- Use of your own brand new solid Shimpo pottery wheels throughout the whole class.
- Master pulling up a simple cylinder shape and manipulating it into professional forms.
- Trimming and smoothing your piece to finalise the form.
- Adding handles and texture if needed.

Give It A Throw (self directed throwing)
Ever watched pottery throw down and fancied yourself the next master potter Keith?
Our ‘Give it a throw’ classes are perfect for those who love to learn hands on, in their own time. You can focus on building on your throwing technique or just have a mindful time in the studio, these 3 hours are all about going at your own pace, trying out new things and having some time to relax and get potty!! We do ask that you have some experience in throwing, we don’t expect you to be a pro. But having an understanding of the tools you will need, how to use the wheel and how to look after your space is important! If you’ve not yet had any experience in throwing and feel like you need a little guidance before you give it a throw alone, you can book onto one of our introduction classes where we cover all the basics on how to get started! We know that you may want to come for the experience and not always want to fire your items in the kiln however if you would like to fire your pieces, There will be a separate charge of £10 to pay on the day. We ask that you collect your items within 2 months after firing or as soon as possible as we have limited storage! Any pots still with us after 2 months may have to be disposed off if we don’t hear from you.
Unfortunately, we all know pottery can be temperamental therefore we sadly can not be responsible for any breakages.
What to bring?
✨ An apron or old shirt to protect your clothes. Although clay washes out, it has a nasty habit of getting places it shouldn’t be!
✨ Old towel or hand cloth to help wash your hands.
✨ If you don’t want to fire your creations but wish to take them home as they are, you may want to bring a box to transport your pieces home!
What’s included?

✨ 2kg of earthenware clay included in the price. You can purchase more clay for £3.50 per kg.
✨ Use of your own Shimpo throwing wheel.
